Highland, providing full service project management architecture, engineering and interior design, has designed the
new K-2 facility in Texas Township for the Wayne Highlands School District.
The school houses 600 students from grades K through 2. The building is designed with a separation of classroom and
shared function areas that allow the school to offer community programs for evenings or off-hour use including the
computer center, gymnasium, cafeteria and arts and craft areas. The building is organized around the central media
center core with segregated entry points for the kindergarten, first and second grade students. It is important that
each grade have a separate and unique identity. Security is a high priority for the District. The entry into the school
for non-students is directly into the administration area. The administration waiting area serves as a "control-point"
for access to the school.
Site work includes relocation of 2 softball fields and a soccer field along with parking and bus areas and utility
infrastructure.
The 70,000 square foot school opened for the fall of 2004. The construction cost was $9,454,000, $700,000 under budget.
