The new 15 bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with its unique developmental design and private room concept, is recognized as one of the first of its kind in the nation. The unit employs a 100% Family-Centered Care Philosophy for Women's and Children's services and is designed to meld the entire program into a holistic approach to mother and baby care.
The attention to privacy and the family's role in the care for baby were foremost design sensitivities. The unit was planned with private infant rooms each with a dedicated family zone that includes storage for personal items and amenities. Use of wood tones, color and pattern contribute to an environment that is welcoming to families and lessens the cold and clinical feel associated to traditional NICUs. The nurses' station was designed to foster the connection between caring staff and families.
The developmental design of this unit sets it apart from the others in the country. Because preemies are hypersensitive to light and noise, special attention was placed on light control and sound transfer throughout the unit to contribute to an environment that is more like the womb.
Unit features include a two bed triage for the evaluation and stabilization of neonates as well as flexible patient rooms planned to accommodate multiple birth families. As a Level 3A NICU, each patient area is designed to care for high-risk, ventilated babies who require multi-system management. Close collaboration with the Moses Taylor Hospital staff enabled Highland Associates to create a specialized, highly functioning unit to the finest detail which promotes both happy families and staff.
