Highland Associates' second commission with Wilkes was for the design of the Student Center and Dining Commons.
The site for the facility is located in downtown Wilkes-Barre, PA situated between the housing and academic zones of
the campus.
The building is three stories, 48,000 square feet, housing the campus dining commons, college store, mail-room facility,
banquet room/night club, student government offices, student recreation space and multi-purpose rooms. The exterior of
the building is brick with pre-cast concrete accents, storefront glass windows and a mansard roof. The design of the
exterior reflects the style of nearby Victorian mansions.
The interior features a twenty foot wide concourse located on the first floor of the building, with pedestrian entries
on both ends. Located centrally within this "Main Street" is a three story atrium, which visually connects the three
floors. A main tower stair takes students to the upper levels of the building.
This project was located based on master plan studies also performed by Highland Associates.
