General Highland Associates was commissioned by the American International Group (AIG) to expand
and upgrade their existing data center in Livingston, NJ. The program for this project called for the expansion of the
data center to support twice it's current 900 MIPS information processing capacity with modular expansion capabilities
built in to ultimately support 4000 MIPS. The upgrades include the installation of mechanical and electrical plants of
expanded capacity with greatly increased reliability.
Cooling / Refrigeration The existing Condenser Water System was replaced by two (2) fifteen
hundred (1500) ton chiller systems with waterside economizer cycles. Each chiller system is totally independent of the
other with redundant chillers, cooling towers and pumps, controlled by separate building management systems, enabling
the data center to remain operational even with the complete loss of one of the plants. Highland reused the existing
condenser water distribution piping and converted it to chilled water use, thereby increasing its cooling capacity.
A considerable amount of time was also spent reviewing the HVAC control system's various points, and their sequence
of operations.
