An existing parking area awkwardly wedged between a parking garage 's light rail system, corporate office building and mall access road was the site selected for a new Macy's in the Newport Center Mall in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Highland answered the challenge by creating a multi-layered box that integrated a bridge entry
from the parking garage with a dual mall entry and a dynamic wing shaped canopy that paralleled the light rail. The wing served the
purpose of defining the main building entry while slicing through a two story glass front that is softly backlit at night. The box was
broken by the use of layers in the facade that broke up the massing in both elevation color and texture.
The three story store created a new
anchor for the mall. Besides the core and shell design Highland was responsible for the execution of all interiors including the mall
entries, escalators, lighting and fixturing. The store has successfully become a jewel in the federated chain.
