Highland Associates provided full Interior, Architecture, Engineering, and Project Management services for the
renovation of an 8,000 square foot loft at 10 East 34th Street, New York, NY. Acting as Project Manager,
Highland contracted directly with an Artisan/Furniture Maker to execute the specialty items, such as the
merchandising cabinetry, steel and glass partitions, etc. Both the client and Highland Associates worked
closely with the artisan. The client's expectations were clearly detailed and there was a mutual understanding
of the ramifications of finishes, details and how changes would affect the final product. Through this strategy,
the client, Westport Corporation, could visualize the architect's design intent allowing them to actively participate
in the design process. This process is more akin to the "Old World" traditional collaboration between architects and
craftsman. The collaboration allowed the design to be nurtured and developed, while maintaining control of the budget,
schedule and quality. Select merchandising elements were field tested in the client's work place. This resulted in
modifications that predictably improved the functionality and workability before the final manufacturing was begun.
The Highland Associates design created a new corporate image and perception of quality and value for the Westport
Corporation, while providing them with a functional work environment.
