Highland Associates was selected to renovate and rebrand Playboy Enterprises’ New York City office through a design competition among several leading NYC architectural firms. The project objective was a complete facility re-design, totaling 70,000 SF, that would represent Playboy’s future by emphasizing the many elements of its current business.
The office encompasses two floors each containing separate annexes whose spaces had to ultimately tie together with logical flow. Highland utilized the Playboy “bunny” logo in numerous architectural gestures. The iconic symbol was abstracted to a 35- foot monument that rises through an open atrium linking the floors together. It is fashioned in wood slats and backlit with 5,000 LED lights. A metal mesh screen hangs behind the atrium stairwell, emulating fish net stockings and creating an effect of architectural lingerie.
The reception area’s signature move is a wall of 15,000 copies of Playboy. The wall of ‘mags’ bridged the gap of architecture display, signage and art, and represents the building blocks of the corporation.
